It's been a wonderful few weeks -- sorry for a delayed posting:
Tony and I traveled together to one of his gigs in Northern Virginia, and although he was under the weather, I was able to squeeze in a wonderful first visit with one of my dearest friends and her new baby (Hi Katie!). Sorry to not have pictures to post...
Traveling back to Greensboro for work is wonderful for reconnection. This month's highlight was seeing Molly McGinn's weekly set at M'Couls. Should you happen to be in Greensboro on a Tuesday, you MUST see Molly perform. She is immensely talented and as they say 'the world is her oyster'.
First - this building lived on our living room wall in a Target exclusive photo, but we finally saw it in person. Introducing the Flatiron Building:
Our neighborhood, Astoria, has a park that I can only imagine will be even more beautiful when Spring brings green (note the mocha squirrels):
How ya doing? Need to take a bathroom break - this is a monster post, so buckle up!
It's always a big deal when your parents visit and an even bigger deal when you left suburbia to move into a 400sf apartment. Well, I can happily report that my parents loved the apartment, loved Astoria, and we had a wonderful weekend in the city!
New York City has always been an important place to me. My Dad has regularly come for business and my first trip here was when I was in fifth grade. It has always been a place that has built my confidence. On that first trip I I flew up alone and then sat in a Broadway play by myself. Dad scalped a ticket for me to see Cats (he had standing room in the back). From that point forward, I'd been coming every year.
So it was very important for me to get the Mom and Dad seal of approval... The parents came up and we had a WONDERFUL extended lunch at Taverna Kyclades in Astoria. I can't wait to take more guests here. It is a beautiful, small, Greek restaurant that offered us a relaxing meal. Dad even made friends with the locals who offered other opinions for things to do in Astoria.
Here is Dad with an ouzo and me with a Greek coffee:
That night, we saw the ageless Ernestine Anderson sing Jazz at the Iridium near Times Square. Afterwards we had a nightcap at the View (revolving restaurant on 47th floor) in the Marriott Marquis.
The next day we started in a grey drizzle through a somber visit to Ground Zero and St. Paul's church and took a little walk and ended up in a celebration of the Chinese New Year in Chinatown where I had my first dim sum:
That night we took it easy, ordered in classic New York pizza and had an all-family-iChat session with my Charlottesville, VA sister and Asheville, NC brother:
